PROGRAM OVERVIEW

MAKERS: Screendance Lab is a two-day creative workshop designed for students aged 15–18 to explore how movement and film come together. The lab encourages curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration, offering participants the opportunity to create short dance-film pieces. No prior experience required.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Foster creativity and curiosity through hands-on exploration of dance and film. Develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Introduce students to basic concepts of choreography, cinematography, and editing. Provide an inclusive, supportive environment that values participation over performance.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

Students aged 15–18. Open to all skill levels and backgrounds. Ideal for students interested in dance, film, drama, art, or media. Inclusive of all bodies and abilities,including those with no prior experience.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the lab, students will: Understand how movement and film can interact to create meaning. Gain basic skills in camera operation, sound design, and editing. Experience collaborative creation and artistic expression. Build confidence in creative risk-taking and self-expression.

METHODOLOGY

The Screendance Lab emphasizes experiential learning through guided activities, group collaboration, and reflective discussion. Students will: Explore movement and body awareness. Learn how cameras can move like dancers. Experiment with filming techniques and sound to influence mood. Work in small groups to produce a short screendance film.

INCLUSIVITY AND SAFETY

The lab is consent-based, inclusive, and supportive. Students can choose their level of participation, take breaks as needed, and engage in movement or non-movement roles. The environment prioritizes respect, creativity, and emotional safety.

  • No experience needed. This lab is designed for beginners and curious creatives.

  • No. You can choose how you participate, moving, filming, directing, or observing.

  • • Camera (if you have one)
    • Phone, tablet, or laptop, and a notebook with a pen or pencil!

  • No. Phones and shared equipment are welcome.

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in. Nothing fancy required.

  • Yes. Registration materials and waivers will be provided via email.
